Just saw this shared by a photographer on Facebook -- "A new law was recently passed, saying that photos without metadata and watermarks are fair game for anyone who wants to use them. Facebook is stripping the metadata from our photos when they are uploaded, making it possible to steal our images if no watermark is present. Protect yourselves.

I may start fazing Facebook out - they have no right to remove information from my photos that state that I am the owner of the image. "

It doesn't mention registering the photos just watermarks & metadata. Any thoughts? Any FACTS I can share or post?

Is there a way to use the online copyright registration form if you post images to a blog on a nearly daily basis?
If I wanted to register them as unpublished I would have to do it daily and if I wanted to register them every 3 months as published I would have to use the paper form with individual publish dates for each photo according to everything I've read at the copyright site and other sources.
I have spent the last week trying to figure this out and that is why only 4% register their work.
Thanks.

Think of publication of your images as the photo's virginity. Once done, it's done. Once it's published, it's now published and can't be unpublished, no matter how much the photo stays "pure" after it's done the deed.

Assuming I post all my images to facebook, flickr, 500px or any social media website, I understand I have up to 3 months from the first picture date to register them as "published" and still have all the legal protection. However, what happens if I decide to take down some of them, am I still protected?. Is it true that once I register my images as "published" I cannot remove them from the "publication", i.e.: facebook, flickr, etc?

Thanks for your excellent educational work

Thanks, and great idea, but (lol) we're lucky with our schedules to post when we can. Maybe we'll take advantage of an established podcast like Scott Kelby's Grid, or TWIP or NIK. Stay tuned. We'll announce here if anything happens.
But for right now, I'm booked shooting the next two weeks and Ed is up to his bippy with real cases.

Conceptually I don't like it one bit. However, it is important for me to point out that I don't practice law in the UK. We do have local counsel in London.

More importantly, it appears to me that once again photographers were caught sleeping on their rights. From what I can tell from listening to BBC (which I do nightly) and the UK press, photographers in the UK did little to nothing to protect their rights. If I am wrong about that I am sure someone will correct me, but sitting here across the pond, I didn't see much evidence of creators waging a meaningful campaign in opposition to this act which serves to permit the widespread use of so-called "orphan" images with few impediments.

It is my understanding that a photo posted to a blog or other social media site is now considered "published". I have read that you can not use the electronic registration for published photos that have different publish dates. How can a photographer keep their social media posting close to real time without registering everyday you post or having to resort to the more expensive paper registration process which requires a listing of each publish date for each image?
