That information is available on the www.copyright.gov site.
It's $35 per application. I've done thousands of images on one application.
It is not only the best/most efficient way, it's the only way.
Ed and I have a step by step explanation of how to register in our book.
There is also a free down-loadable Powerpoint tutorial you can download at the Copyright.gov site

I do 750 x 750 at 72 PPI and a compression of 5 or 6. All you need are small files to ID your images in court, if it comes to that.

I curious what size of jpg file for each photograph do you recommend when registering a series of photographs? Also do you have any recommendations on the level of compression to use?

If you are an attorney (or know one) the complaint can easily be accessed on line by going to the ECF system used in the Federal Courts, Southern District of New York. Additionally, a hard copy of the complaint is a pubic record and is viewable at the courthouse where copies can be made.

It is cumbersome to post on the blog as with the exhibits it runs many, many pages. You can reach Ed directly and privately at ecglaw@gmail.com if you are unable to obtain a copy for additional suggestions.

First off every case is unique. The cost/benefit ratio varies. An experienced attorney can give decent estimates of certain cost, expenses and related items depending upon whether ie. the nature of the case, the opposing party, whether the case is settled (and at what point) or is tried to completion.

Your question is unintentionally awkward. Your question concerns "defending a copyright from infringement". I am not quite sure what you mean. Suffice for now to say that if a registered image has been infringed, is the subject of a litigation and the registrant prevails in the litigation, the Federal Court may award to that party attorneys fees in connection with that case. We have set out that scenario out in our book, lectures, DVDs and Photoshop User Magazine articles. It is also contained in fairly plain language in the Copyright Law itself.

In your third point you mention the ability to sustain the case financially, with the understanding that all cases are different can you give an estimate of the cost of defending a copyright from infringement? Hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, Hundreds of thousands?

For some good information regarding copyright, public places, and buildings, catch our article on “Copyright and Public Buildings” at
http://thecopyrightzone.com/?p=45
It will clarify some issues regarding this case and matters of photographing buildings.

A follow up: I just walked past Nino's restaraunt located on NY's Upper East Side. A photo of Nino and Stevie Wonder is currently displayed outdoors next to the entrance along with another photo of former ball player, Boston Red Sox Manager and Yankee Coach, Don Zimmer embracing Nino - a die hard Yankee fan.

These are the current outdoor shots - they change from time to time. The inside of the restaurant features additional and "typical" celebrity images which help make up the decor. I told Nino that I have shots of Mel Brooks, Joe Namath, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Rachel Ray in my office. He seemed to care only about Rachael Ray. Wonder why?
